So I've had a really bad case of life the past few months but I thought I'd brag about one of the projects I've managed to work on.I have long been enamoured of the really cool ruffled edged veils that can bee seen in many 14th and 15th century images (Rogier van der Weyden shows them quite a bit). Having spent quite a bit of time looking at the images I was rather dissatisfied with the concept of a strip of gathered cloth attached to another, it seemed too harsh a edge and the paintings showed a smooth transition between the body of the fabric and the edge. So I have been experimenting with ways to make fabric ruffle as it is woven (I needed a project for my new big loom). What I have found is that if the edge is held at a lesser tension than the body of the fabric it will ruffle as it is woven. I think the effect is pretty cool. There are a couple more pictures at http://users.vnet.net/burts/anna/veil/ The stats for the veil: Warp and Weft 22/2 linen (6500 yds/lb) Warp sett 24 epi (body), 36 epi (1" edging) Weft ~26 ppi Shrinkage - 2% width, 3% length Mitake. quote: It will probably be a couple of months before I get to the point of having time to do more of this sort of weaving. I'm traveling more than I'm at home and the loom's not terribly portable. But yes I'd be willing to discuss a commission... say April?
that's fine, lack of time is something I can fully understand at the moment! Email me when you're ready. Thanks, Gina -------------------- Gina-b Silkwork & Passementerie Tak v Bowes Departed Soper Lane
