Once again, though we have heard it time after time after time - just because they lived a long time ago didn't mean they didn't know what they were doing.
Case in point. I just bought two costrels (canteens) in white earthenware. Duplicates of some that I had seen in the Sackler Gallery in DC. Funny looking necks... think I will rinse them out. So I rinse them, and when pouring out the water - GOOD GRIEF! They POUR! No glug, glug, no surges, no dribbles, just a straight stream! I want to patent that neck!

So... yes, whenever practical, do it the Period Way. It will work better in the long run, because they did know what they were doing.

PS - they are made out of a porous white earthenware that sweats slightly, then evaporates - you would have cool water in the warmest weather. I am not surprised, just impressed.

I read your original post over on the AA. I'm glad you posted this here, because now I can ask you questions:

*What piece is your costrel copied from?
*What period?
*Country of origin?
*Can we see pictures of this amazing item?
*Are they available for sale somewhere, or did you have it custom fabricated?

Thanks for the info!

As far as iron-clad provenance for them, I can't give it. I am working from my (admittedly fallible) memory, of Islamic items of the ?10th-?14th centuries in various musea.

I found these in a local ceramica shop here in Andalucia. They only had two, but if more show up I will have to grab them as well.

Gwen - if you will send me your snail-mail address, I can send you one and let you make up your mind on it. I just don't have the resources here to check them out properly.

Hi Ziad-

Thanks for your very kind offer, but I'll have to pass if you think they are of Islamic origin. When you said the Sackler Gallery, I thought you were referring to something European.

I'd think someone who is doing Middle Eastern or Spanish would snap them up in a heartbeat.

Thanks anyway!
