Back on July 20th, I attended Christian Tobler's hands on presentation at the Higgins Museum. I give it a thumbs up and I think it's well worth attending. The presentation includes a very straight forward introduction of the background and history of Ringeck and Lichtenauer. And where the material has come from. Also introduced is 4 sampled attacks that are repeated through different phases of the hands on training which focussed primarily on longsword (using wasters) and basic wrestling. What I really liked about this presentation is that it was presented on a level that I consider well above a basic 101 longsword class, but is less elaborate than perhaps Bob Charron's in depth Fiore class. In short, it is a wonderful introduction to german swordsmanship (especially if you haven't studied it before) to learn A FEW of the aspects of the training systems of the time. I also appreciated the fact that the same 4 moves were repeated so that you could learn how the concepts of each continued through each type of combat training. In addition, Christian offered handouts at the end of the class as a followup and for future review. For those that have not seen the textbook, it is quite straight forward in each area and is helpful in learning what different moves let you accomplish (as attack and defense). I should note that it is very important to realize that this is AN INTERPRETATION. And like all interpretations, is subject to review and continuous improvements. All in all, well worth taking and getting a taste of this style and era. P [ 08-14-2002: Message edited by: Friedrich ]
