We have a new Anglo-Saxon group here in California. A friend of mine, of Filipino extraction, wants to join but he wants to play true to his racial type. Well there were no Filipinos in Anglo-Saxon England, so he'd have to be somebody else. I hit on the idea of a Hunnish or Mongolian persona. In looking at the history of the time and place, I can observe a few points:O I believe the Romans (before about 400AD) brought in Alans (Alanni) to help protect the Hadrian Wall. Probably not many, and by the 8th C (our focus) they would have been well integrated into Anglo-Saxon society. He would wear AS clothing etc., possibly retaining an heirloom knife or whatever, retain some of his Mongolian looks. His name might be a combination of Alan and Anglo-Saxon.
O The Venerable Bede numbers the Huns as accompanying the Angles, Saxons and Jutes in their invasion/colonization of England. The Huns were broken up as an effective fighting force (and as a people soon thereafter), after the battle of Chalons-sur-Marne in 451. Not a lot of other evidence along this line. Bede wrote some centuries later, so he may have been somewhat less than accurate.
O Charlemagne trounced the Avars in about the 8th C. Refugees may have fled to England, bringing with them their culture pretty much intact. They were horse archers, for instance.
Anyway, your thoughts, ideas, questions, stories, pictures are all welcome!
