A bunch of diverse folks spent yesterday (Sat, July 24, 2004) doing location work for History Channel's new series "Command Decision": Battle of Hastings! I'll post here when I'm sent the airdate.

Gordon Frye (my hubby) provided two horses, and Henrik of Havn (Duke, SCA, and a REAL reenactor/historian) ended up cast as William the Conquerer (or invader, depends on your POV). Cool folks came up from Arizona, down from Oregon, and from the Bay Area to film on the slopes of Mr. Diablo.

Fun with live steel! Lotsa bruised and scraped knuckles, a few armor bites, and one broken wrist (stupid horse tricks...*sigh*). The production company doing this show are very nice people and they really want to get it "right". They were very open to suggestions and corrections from the "cast". Hoping for a very cool episode!

Stay tuned,
Theorra/Nabila/Squire Bob (ended up doing a cavalry charge with lance...have the bruises to prove it)

Hi Neb,

Let's hope they take the suggestions to heart. The companies tend to be notorious for soliciting opinion then ignoring it.

Sounds like fun. Let us know when it is going to air.

Only time will tell if they choose to accept the advice or not. You're right though, I've been on productions where the Director or AD will ask "What would they do here?" and then, after a thorough explanation on your part as to what and why things were done a certain way, you get to watch them proceed to do almost the diametrical opposite...after profuse thanks for the information, of course. But hey, they pay for the advice, it's their's to do with as they please

So how were original lances made? Did they use lodge-pole pines?

Glad to hear you're OK, Gordon. That was quite a spill! For what it's worth, though, I think that all the "horse footage" will look great when the episode airs.

Anyhow, those of us who drove down from Oregon had a great time. All the posing and charging and fighting for the camera was fun, but it was just as nice to get to meet and mingle with some fellow 11th century reenactors who were dressed and outfitted as well as everybody was. We're all still a bit achy and footsore, but we had a great time.

Hey Cory, good to hear from you! I have to admit feeling rather dumb about that spill... I bloody well KNEW that my horse didn't like the shields, and that the straps which work great for infantry just don't quite make it for trying to use reins at the same time, but I had to do it anyway... Oh well, good decisions come from wisdom, wisdom comes from experience, experience, as they say, comes from bad decisions, LOL! At least I was smart enough not to wear the shield's neck strap! Yikes!

Anyway, you guys really looked great, and were a joy to work with. Thanks to all who lent a hand with putting up the horses, too, while I was "hor's de combat" as it were!

Hope to see you chaps again soon!

Oh, Woodcrafter... sorry to say, for the 11th Century lances, I haven't the foggiest, sorry.
