Greetings all -

My wife and I are moving in the Fall to Bellingham, Washington for a job at WWU. Does anyone know of any Living History groups in the area? Seattle and Vancouver are both 90-100 minutes away from Bellingham.

We don't know anyone in the area (other than a few of my future colleagues at the university), and are hoping there are a couple of good groups in that neighborhood.

All the best & thanks for any help

David

Hi David,

Anne-Marie Rousseau, founder of La Maisnie, is located in Seattle.

They are 15th c. Burgundian. The household of Antoine of Burgundy. Contact her, I am sure she'd be delighted.

Thanks Jenn -

I remembered Anne-Marie about 5 minutes after my post and sent her a message. Is her group the only one in the area? Their website is impressive!

And there is PARMA, in Victoria and Vancouver, though we are 14C (eventually I'll post in the Groups section). Our annual week long event at Fort Rodd Hill is at the end of June.

Greetings Mark -

14th C. is ideal, as most of our garb is 1390s. Is Victoria really a 2 hr drive and a 2 hr ferry ride from Bellingham? Cudos to you too for PARMA's website.

I'm not sure of the travel time. Since I live on an island, I'm used to the ferry, and don't pay attention to the travel times (I drive to PA and AZ every year). BC ferry from Tsawassen is 1 hour forty minutes. Depending on the border, the drive to Bellingham shouldn't be more than 1.5 hours. The Anacortes ferry may be faster, but I've never taken it.

If you are moving in the fall, you will miss our FRH event in June, and our Bob Charron Fiore seminar in July.

Hello again -

The July seminar may work, as we will need to come out west to arrange housing sometime this summer (though who knows when). When will it be held?

It's great to know there are two very good groups in the area! Perhaps John Vernier and Eleanor Rust, also 14th C. enthusiasts, will join in! They can get cheap flights from LA, and have promised to come up from time to time.

We're very excited about the move, and are already arranging to add a puppy to the family in October. He won't fit into the reenactor scene very well (he'll be a big fluffy polar dog), but will certainly add fun to our lives.

BTW Anne-Marie, what's the name of that wonderful Greek restaurant in Bellingham?

Take care all

David

Mykonos. Dig the funky pink neon and wierd shaped building by the side of I5. Great service, and really good food. Its one of our standard post event "can we have food brought to us and not have to wash the dishes" places . http://whatcom.kulshan.com/Washington/Whatcom/Bellingham/Mykonos.htm

Calumet Restaurant, The
113 E. Magnolia
Bellingham, WA 98225

I don't know if the early period is of interest to you, or if the distance involved is too frustrating an issue, but the Pacific northwest has a growing Regia Anglorum presence. The group will probably be seeking a landgrant in the next year or so. Most of the membership at the present time is in the Portland area, but we do have a few members in the Seattle region.

For more information on the Pac/NW Regia Anglorum group (which I believe currently stands at about 7 or 8 official members, with about 4 more ready to join), I can offer a few suggestions.

There are two websites you may want to look over: the main Regia Anglorum site and the Regia Anglorum North America site.

There are also a few email lists available: the Regia NA mail list, and the Portland Regia mail list. The latter site includes a lot of information specific to the PacNW, including a list of local Regia members and discussions about meeting times and places, plans for events, etc. As I previously mentioned, the current group is kind of "centered" around Portland, but we do have members in the Seattle area. There are also some useful links and files on the site.

And by all means, feel free to drop me an email ( cnielsen@connect2.com )with any questions. Or you can email the main contact (and guy who got Regia started in the region), Dorian Butcher ( butchers@easystreet.com ) .

Albrecht (Knut, in some circles)

Our FRH event is over (you can see some of the photos at woodcrafter's site). I'm off to Pennsic soon.
Parma will be updating and redoing its website, including getting a new address.

Hi David,

In a discussion with someone, it was suggested that La Maisnie is either in hiatus or no longer around. I am not 100% sure and I haven't seen AM on the board in an ice age. For clarification, you might try emailing her directly to see what's happening with that group.

Cheers,

Jenn

Our friends from Montreal never seem to have a problem. They come down several times a year with a mini-van loaded with gear. I will have to ask them if they have to jump through hoops.

The only thing that could potentially get you into trouble is medieval firearm especially if it's been recently fired and they have dogs that are trained to smell for specific things at the point of crossing.

We keep meaning to go up to attend one of their events, but life keeps getting in the way.
