I'm doing some initial work on one of my next projects which is to put together a basic late 14th century grooming kit.

My main reference in this area is the MoL book and the only item of grooming kit mentioned in this is a metal curry-comb which seems to have been in quite common use.

I was wondering if any other members of this forum have already done any work in this area? I'm particularly interested to find out what (if any) other items of grooming kit were used.

I haven't come across any references to hoof picks and wonder if in fact they were used. I assume that a wooden twig would have sufficed for a hoof pick as there appears to be no surviving iron ones. Ditto for soft brushes. Any information would be appreciated!

Hi Callum;

I think I've got some stuff somewhere - no promises - but it'll take me a while to dig out.

dear callum
we use mol as a base and have had some great combs made up there is actually a picture on our web site of a groom using one.hoof picks well no evidence to be found as one rusty nail looks like another and i quote the musuem of london on this.for ourselves we use natural brisle brushes,we would use the combs them selves but all the horses are clipped at the moment.in fact we did a gig at mol a fortnight ago and the public loved the fact that musuem replicas were used on the horselines..."hey we`ve just seen one of those in the museum" was a quote from one member of the audience.
also the cheapest junior curry combs available in england look exactly like early 16th century german ones!
