Crispin-

At Pennsic I purchased a CD of Hurdy Gurdy music done by some SCA guys - Paul Ash and Kevin Hartnell- who call themselves "La Notta". Are you familiar with their work?

I really like the CD, which is called "La Notta dei Calvieri" but don't know enough about medieval music to be a critic. I know the hurdy-gurdy Paul Ash plays is a baroque HG, but I can identify some of the songs as being legitimately authentic medieval (Maltese Bransle, Saltarello). Beyond that, I can't tell if this stuff is fabulously authentic, filk, "in the style of", or just plain not right.

With Christmas / 12th Night coming up, I'd like to start a thread about cool gifts. I'd like to post this CD as a suggestion, but would like to know how authentic it is before I make a blanket recommendation.

Can you help? I'm willing to send you the CD to critique, if necessary.

Thanks!

Gwen

I'm afraid I don't know the group. I'd be happy to offer a critique if I can, but at very least, I'd need to get the liner notes with names of pieces and composers, and even then, it wouldn't be a good test of style... email me and I'll make arrangements to get a copy from you to listen to maybe?
What are the criteria you are interested in? Do you want it limited to 15th century, or or you going as broad as pre-baroque?
For instance, I'd venture to guess the "maltese bransle" you mention is probably the one from Arbeau, which was published in the second half of the 16th century. Is that outside of your parameters?

Poo- shows you what I know about music...

I'll send you the CD, you give it a listen and critique it. You can rate it as you see fit from a historical and/or performance perspective. Even if it's not historically accurate, it might be worth having just because you like hurdy gurdy music.

If the stuff is good for 16th C., that's OK too, as I suspect there must be some 16th C. afficianados hanging around.
