Can anyone give me a bit more background on this image, or the manuscript it comes from? The caption is very vague, it seems to me that this is a depiction of a specific event, probably a wedding feast. I'd like to know who the people are, the date, year the illumination was done, etc. Although the information appears to be right there, I'm not having much luck finding out on my own.

Histoire d'Olivier de Castille et d'Artus d'Algarbe
Paris, BnF, Département des manuscrits, Français 12574 fol. 181v
http://expositions.bnf.fr/gastro/grands/122.htm

Thanks!

Hi Gwen,

I believe it is a romance, rather than a depiction of a historical event. I've never heard of an important 15th century (or 14th century) personage named Olivier de Castille or Artus d'Algarbe. Given the mens hairstyles, I'd say the image was made post 1470, and I'd guess possibly out of a Northern French workshop - it looks a little different than the Flemish illuminations I'm used to looking at.

Thanks for that! I surmised many of the same things, but hoped someone would be able to give me some concrete facts to support my (and your) speculations.

ok concrete facts np

Histoire d'Olivier de Castille et Artus d'Algarbe

* Date: Avant 1467
* Dédicataire: Philippe III le Bon, duc de Bourgogne (1396–1467)
* Forme: Prose
* Langue: Français

le conte des deux frères L'histoire d'Olivier de Castille et Artus d'Algarbe », Les manuscrits de David Aubert "escripvain" bourguignon,

its a legend/ story like arthur : olivier represents collective values and his brother Artus represents individual values.

That painting is suppose to represent indirectly the burgundy court .....with a crown in it. (its only a possibility by a french scholar at the univerity of Besancon)

Hi La Cuine,

It was written before 1467, but wheb was it finished being illuminated? THe two do not necessssarily coincide - for instance, the Chronicles of Hainault were completed well before Philip the Goods death, but they were not finished with the illuminations until the early 1470's, under the patronage of Charles the Bold.

Hello:

I went to the website for BnF: http://www.bnf.fr/

Pursuant to your query I perused "Recherche sur le site de la BnF".

That seemed only to lead to dead-end PDFs, all part of the needlessly complex maze there. But perhaps someone else may fare better with that than I did. It is actually a nice website there.

Here is David Aubert Bibliographie: http://www.arlima.net/ad/david_aubert.html

(Maybe you all have found that already.)

It states 1467 as date for "Histoire d'Olivier de Castille et Artus d'Algarbe".

For what it is worth, the male style of clothes, shoes and hair (with some differences of course - especially hats) are similar enough to what I see in the Alemannic German Fechtbuecher circa 1450-70.
