Hi

Has anybody come across either descriptions or extant objects used for transporting correspondence? Specifically letters? Did a courier or messenger just stick them in a bag or pouch along with all their other stuff that they were taking on a journey with them, or would they have what we'd call today a document wallet?

There is a document case/tube in the MET. Also there's a Durer drawing that shows a mounted courier with a similar tube.

I'll have to see if we can find any writing that discuss them.

Cheers thats great - I have been reading the Cely letters recently and there are a few "I sent this person with letter and x amount of money" and they describe the bags the coinage is transported in but not the documents.

Many thanks
Mike

I just had a "letter" sent to Jeffrey at the deHaar event in May. Since he was participating as Jehan de Haynin, the letter was ostensibly sent from his wife Marie de Roisins. The letter contained a set of arming points in Marie's colours as a love token.

Jorge Kelman did the work for me and it was splendid. I'll point this thread out to Jorge, perhaps he can post images of it and a bit of an explaination. It really was amazing and definitely worth seeing.

Hi Jenn

I not having any luck with either the Durer or MET examples. There are two Durer "courier" engravings (small and large) that I can find but can't see a tube on them Is there another one that I am missing?

Also regards the MET one - I don't suppose that you have a picture for it?

Many thanks
Mike

I have a photograph or two of the one at the MET. I will see where I put my photo disk and let you know. I will check the engraving again to make sure I am remembering it correctly.

Hi

Thanks alot for that. The only tube type thing that I can think of is the behind-the-saddle-roll pack that is in the Memling "Triumph of Christ" but that is more luggage than document case.

Thanks
Mike
