Ok, so here's a question my friend Becca posed tro me, and I don't have an answer for.

Let's say a guy is tournamenting and his wife comes along (after all, all those women in the galleries had to come from somewhere!) Let's also say he's Italian, or German, or Spanish, and he's travelled to Burgundy for a tournament. Is his wife going to wear the fashions from their homeland, or are they both going to have clothes made in the local styles to try and fit in?

I have my own opinion but hope someone with something a little more concrete than an opinion will have something to offer.

Thanks!

Gwen

Nothing concrete - just opinion here

I'd say she'd wear clothing from her own country. Its when she's been shopping whilst at the tournament that she returns home with some new-fangled fashion!

Thats just what happens when we travel today really.

I get the impression from the descriptions I have read about pas d'armes that the foriegn guests are dressed in their best styles from their home, sort of a way to show off.
Certainly some of the chroniclers go into detail describing the clothing being worn by the foriegn guests. Conversly accounts or letters sent home by foriegn guests to Burgundian court events also often go into detail of what was being worn by the local courtiers.

Cheers

Hi Joram-

That's exactly the sort of reference I was looking for- can you supply more details such as books I could get those descriptions from?

Thanks!

Hi Gwen

John Paston III mentions the splendour of the clothes worn at the wedding of Margaret and Charles.
http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/etcbin/toccer-new2?id=PasLett.sgm&images=images/modeng&data=/lv1/Archive/mideng-parsed&tag=public&part=331&division=div2

here is a transcription of the letter.

Im still trying to track down a reference from an Italian diplomate, and a reference from a German knight, who both mentioned Burgundian clothes in letters, will post again once I track them down. The German reference is mentioned in Richard Vaughans Charles the Bold.

Cheers
Joram

Fab! Thanks! I'll work on transcribing that letter into modern English while I'm travelling, it will give me something to do on the plane. I love how Paston the younger refers to Antoine as "my lord Bastard".

I bet I'll find something in de Haynin as well.......
