Can anyone point me in the direction of a good book or two on Germany (HRE) in the 15th century? I've been fed a lot of books on the Wars of the Roses lately, and I've been wondering what was going on in Germany at around that time. Thanks for any help!

Wars of the Roses isn't going to help you much as it is definitely a English dynastic squabble. While there was some spill over onto the continent in regard to alliances, it won't really help for 15th c Germany.

Are you interested in Northern or Southern?

Martin can probably help you out immensely in this area as he is a co-founder of 1476 (correct me if I'm wrong ). I think his area of specialty is Southern Germany.

I know WotR won't help me with Germany, one of my friends has just been feeing me books on it, and it got me curious about Germany again. I'm more interested in Northern, but I'll be happy to read any good books you can recommend.

Hi Siggy,
well you already got a tip from Jenn!
Can you read German? As there are not that many books on medieval Germany in English. If you can read German I would for one recomend the book list on the 1476 homepage, for a genral impression on 15th century Germany I would recomend the following book: "Alltag im Spätmittelalter" Harry Kühnel ISBN 3-222-12451-5
As Jenn mentioned my field is southern Germany but a very smallbut good north German group is: http://www.bauer-und-bonde.de/ they are located in Hamburg and are displaying the life of north german 15th century peasants.

Hi Siggy,
jupp, then most good information is in German.
Don´t know if you found the english version of that page I mentioned? Here it is: http://www.bauer-und-bonde.de/english/eindex.html
In any case the stuff from northern Germany is a bit differant than southern Germany, starting fron ceramics over to slightly differant clothing and other bits and pieces.

Hi Jason,
well as you see in the groups directory I am working on a small projekt, I have been invited to participate with Wolf Argent and I am also working with Les Levées Cantonales, which are almost in front of my house door over in Quebec. As to events in the States, I have to wait until my wifes immigration is through and also for 2006 some relatives have announced that they wished to visit us in our new home, so planning is at the moment a bit hard.
Well when ever you happen to be in Ontario do drop in.

Oh not much just preparing for the holiday season, lots of cards to write, various calligraphy and painting jobs that need to be finished for several people over in Europe.
Otherwise busy collecting material for a medieval garden, and of course all the German town seals I can get my hands on, as I hope to make the metal seals from them so that I can put on the proper seals to these copied documents. Ingin and I are also working on the home page for the "Haus zum Rosgarten" project.
Little things to do so that winter isn´t boring!

A garden is a very relaxing hobby to have, helps releave stress, so Im told. Thats a good one to have!

I have the utmost respect for caligraphers! I dont really have the patience for it. By the time I was taking type/text in college, we were switching from type to font We all cheat with computers now lol I enjoy creating fantasy lettering styles like Tolkein and what not for those Sci-fi and fantasy folks I work on projects for, but actually sticking to a pre-recorded art form is patience I lack! lol Kudos to you.
