This motif comes up a lot in art around the 14th-16th centuries -- this article has a good explanation of the imagery, as well as some illustrations, but elsewhere, you can see a 14th century ivory casket and 15th century aquamanile at the Met, and 16th century artwork by Hans Baldung Grien and Lucas Cranach the Elder.

(And a 15th century tray at the V&A; search for Museum Number 144-1869.)

(And another ivory casket at the British Museum; search for M&ME 1856,6-23,166.)

(And a bunch of embroideries -- the image comes up on some medieval German klosterstickerei, including the Malterer Hanging.)
