Hi everybody,

I'm looking desperatly for a photo of the effigy of the tomb of
Charles of Valois, brother of the french king Philip VI, Comte of Alençon, buried in St. Denis Church in (of course) france.

He died at Crecy in 1346. I own a book that shows him in armour, wearing a bascinet with visor and baviere, as well as complete plate leg-defeneses (which is in my opinion not typical at this time, as the oldest surviving example if complete plate leg armour is dated to 1360 as far as i know).

It is said that the effigy was made right after his death, so the armour possibly shows what he wore at crecy.

Especially important to me is the helmet, as I hope to get my hands on one which is in my opinion very close to what is shown on his tomb; but I want to be sure.

Of anyone has an image of this, please please send me as soon as possible, as I only have time for decision until monday...

Oh, and, I'm also interested in any kind of material for early (pre-1370) complete plate leg defenses, so if anyone is willing...my mailbox has lots of space )

Almost forgot: mail is esca@rent-a-ritter.de

Thanx in advance!!

Hi Jens,
Are you still looking for a photo of the effigy?

The picture you have, is that a drawing/painting? If so, do they state that it was copied from his effigy?

Most French effigies were destroyed in the revolution, so it's not very likely that it still exists.
But I can have a look if it's represented in the compilation of 16th/17th century drawings I have.

Erik

Hi Erik,

Thank you for answering. Actually it is a drawing, and because I'm quite unsure about it's correctness, especially what details are concerned, I'm looking for a photo of the effigy itself.
The author states that it shows the effigy, but does not make any comment about if it is copied directly from it.

Hi Jens,
You may find that the effigy no longer exists and that the drawing in the book is the only one surviving.

You may want to look for it in:
Jean Adhemar, Les Tombeaux de la Collection Gaignieres. Gazette de Beaux-Arts. 84(1974) Should be on page 135-136 if it's there. The article spans 3 issues of the periodical and reproduces some 2,000 effigies.
The drawings are from the collection of GAIGNIERES, FRANCOIS ROGER DE (1642-1715). See here: http://41.1911encyclopedia.org/G/GA/GAIGNIERES_FRANCOIS_ROGER_DE.htm

I went through my photocopies of the article I but had not photocopied any of the tomb drawings with a date of death from 1345-1346. (I just photocpoied what I thought would be of particular interest, which was 26 pages).

Hope that helps,

Erik

Erik,

It seems certain that the effigy still exists. I did a quick search on AltaVista for Count of Alencon.
http://www.altavista.com/image/

This turned up two photos of a pair of recumbent stone effigies; one of Alençon, and the other of "Maria de la Cerda Wife of Charles the Count of Alencon". Unfortunately, the publisher, Mike Reed, has moved. With so many Mike Reeds out there, it seems a fruitless pursuit to get a better image from him.

Hi Erik, Mart and Peder,

Thank your very much for your help.
Actually I did an image search- but not on altavista, a mistake as it seems. Unfortunatly the images do not seem to be on the server anymore.

Thank you especially for the book hint, Erik, seems as if this one is worth looking for, effigies of that period are a very valueable source for me in general.

Jens,

I tried the back door approach. A search for 'Mara de la Cerda' yielded Mr. Reeds photo on this site:
http://www.findagrave.com

This gives contact information for Mr. Reed as:

mike@thecemeteryproject.com

It might be worth an e-mail if it loks like the photo is at the proper angle for the detail you seek.

Hi Jens,

If you are mightily interested in 14th century effigies (as I am) you might want to take a look in:

Hurtig, Judith (1979), The Armored Gisant Before 1400.
New York & London: Garland Publishing, Inc. ISBN: 0-8240-3956-4.

Pages 44 and 45/46 and plates 64 and 67 in this book are of Charles of Valois though he does not seem to have any helmet there with him.
What book did you see his picture in? Maybe the author/editor depicted him with a helmet he thought typical of the time or had seen depicted on another effigy.
