How important was the 12 days of Christmas in the early 15thC English calendar?
What did it entail? What kind of celebration was it?

Hi;

Rather surprisingly, christmas isn't that big a festival in the period - easter is notably more important.

The modern pre-eminence of christmas is almost completely a nineteenth-century phenomena.

Agreed.

Actually, many of the Christmas traditions were German & Scandanavian (pagan based and adopted as catholic tradition) in origen.
IE: Christmas trees, yule logs and feasting traditions.

A neat book that discusses some of the history is:
Christmas Customs and Traditions by Clement Miles. ISBN 0486233545
