HEY! (the strongly worded bit)

A book recommendation for those interested in medieval material culture -

A three volume set of books is out, and it should be considered a must buy:

Spätmittelalter am Oberrhein:Maler und Werkstätten 1450-1525, (ISBN 3-7995-0200-9)

Spätmittelalter am Oberrhein:Alltag, Handwerk und Handel - Katalogband (ISBN 3-7995-0201-7 hardcover, ISBN 3-7995-0207-6 paperback),

Spätmittelalter am Oberrhein:Alltag, Handwerk und Handel - Aufsatzband (ISBN 3-7995-0202-5 hardcover, ISBN 3-7995-0208-4 paperback)

Published by Thorbecke, Inc., Stuttgart in cooperation with the Badisches Landesmueseum, Karlsruhe.

The catalog and supplimentary volumes may be difficult to get, but the "Maler und Werkstätten" (painters and workshops) is easily ordered. Price - 35 Euros per volume(!!!).

All the texts is in German, but do not let that intimidate! Pictures of everyday items such as shoes, combs, eating utensils, drinking glasses, optical glasses, purses, playing cards etc. Extant rooms, staircases (!!!), furniture - a truly rich source for the reenactor and amateur medieval historian.

I give it a hearty two thumbs up.

Regards

David

Hey David,

Do you have a web site or address to order the books? I tried Amazon, no luck there. Thanks,

Veltin

Hi Veltin -
www.amazon.de works for the first of the three volumes, and they will ship to the States, but you may have to pay a couple of bucks in duty, though for such cheap books, I'd not worry too much about it.

I ordered the other two volumes THREE TIMES through a local bookstore here in Aachen. The first time I received an "out-of-print" notification from the publisher, the second time (paperback order) I got the same message, but then the books DID arrive a few weeks later (was already in the States for the summer). Third time was a charm - hardback, good binding, and high quality photographs and articles (in German). Well worth the trouble and price.

Regards

David

P.S. - Thorbecke's (publisher's) web address:

I have ordered from amazon.de with good success. In the US there is no duty on books, the main cost involved with ordering is shipping, but with amazon it's not too bad. Also if you already have an amazon US account setup it will transfer over to the international amazons.

Originally I said: If your german language skills are not too good, you can pretty will muddle through the site if you use google or altavista translation. - Well having just gone to the site apparently something has changed with either amazon or google, but you can now only get the first page translated.

Thanks for the heads up on the books. It's wonderful to hear about additional sources that I wouldn't normally find.

Mitake.

Another book in the same category:

Stadtluft, Hirsebrei und Bettelmönch - Die Stadt um 1300

Published by Konrad Theiss Verlag, Stuttgarg, ISBN 3-8062-1059-4. This book deals with urban medieval material culture. It has an extensive discussion of 14th C. toilets, including two surviving seats (!!!), and photos of toilets that survived until the 19th C. before city planners cleaned things up. Loads of wooden pieces (spoons, bowls, etc.), and metalwork - coins, needles, pilgrim badges, etc. The last chapter has a very interesting examination of medieval health care using period sources, and looking at surviving human remains (bones). Again, all the text is in German, but anyone needing the help with caption translation can email me (or dozens of others on this board) for help.

Regards

David

Just a little bump - the forum was pretty busy when I originally posted info on these books.

I just recieved the first volume of this set "Maler und Werkstatten". It took about 20 days to get here, which is understandable as I live in Alaska and it did come from Germany after all. The book is great! Lots and lots of really good pictures of paintings and woodcuts, and a few pictures of gold work and wood carvings. 99 percent of the pictures I have not seen before. Very cool. It is a big large format book with over 500 pages. Good price, even after shipping it was about $50.00. Now all I need to do is learn German. Thanks David for the good book information.
