Can anyone recommend to me good sources for medieval images online? I'm especially looking for big sets of images, such as entire manuscripts. I've found the Manesse Codex, the Bayeux Tapestry, Gaston Phoebus' Livre du Chasse, part of the Maciejowski Bible, and the Très Riches Heures of Jean de Berry; but I haven't come across any more, and can't think of any more major ones to look for. Any ideas?

In case anyone else is interested, I'll share what I found:

The Bibliothèque Nationale Française [www.bnf.fr/enluminures/aaccueil.htm] is probably my top pick. This site contains the complete illustrations from several important manuscripts, including Froissart's Chronicles, the Petites Heures of Jean, Duc de Berry, Gaston Phoebus' Livre du Chasse, and several more.

The twelve calendar pages from the Très Riches Heures of Jean, Duc de Berry, are everywhere, but I did find one site which has all the illustrations from this manuscript: www.christusrex.org/www2/berry/index.html.

The Manesse Codex: http://www.manesse.de/manesse0-9.shtml

The Bayeux Tapestry: http://www.hastings1066.com/baythumb.shtml

The Maciejowski Bible: http://www.keesn.nl/mac/mac_en.htm (I'm not sure whether this is complete.)

And one of my favorites: the Monumental Brass Society, whose online picture library contains images from over 100 memorial brasses, mostly English: http://www.mbs-brasses.co.uk/pic_lib/picture_library

Perhaps this will be of use to someone. I'd love to own all these in print, but it'll be years before I can afford them all.

http://www.manuscripta-mediaevalia.de/hs/hs-online.htm

has quite a few.

Are you concerned with images, or would 150 folios of text be fine? Is there a certain time frame you are interested in finding? I've got plenty of sites, but it helps to know what you're after.

WOW! Mart, thanks for the site you posted. As I don't read German, I would probably never have found it. This is a tremendous help. The interface is a little clumsy, as I'm not interested in text at this point, only pictures, and would prefer thumbnails to flipping through a page at a time.... But I'll just have to be persistent. At this rate, before too long I'll have enough pictures to fill up a whole CD!

Youcan get the thumbnails easily enough through the University site.
http://www3.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/cgi-bin/ebind_cpg/cpg67

for example, will take you to the "Sigenot" manuscript. You can change out the numbers '67' and replace them with other Codex numbers from the first site I referenced. Simply click on "Generiere Thumbnails" t the bottom of the page.

"Sigenot" is a rare example, with artwork on each page. Cpg 371, in contrast, has only one or two illustrations in the entire manuscript.

Again, time frame is important. You may not have an interest at all in a manuscript like the the "Aberdeen Bestiary" from the late 12th cetury, or Ee3.59 from the mid 1200's, even though both are available online. You may wish to check out the Royal Danish Library (KB) as well. Dscriptorium at BYU also has some earlier works. A search engine can do wonderful things!

A collection at the Bibliotheque National de France:
http://www.bnf.fr/enluminures/manuscrits/amanuscrit.htm

A collection at the Bodlian Library: http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/dept/scwmss/wmss/medieval/browse.htm

Both are faily comprehensive and stupendous. The Bod covers a longer period of time...

There's a fairly good site on Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts (from the collections of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Museum Meermanno) which organizes the images by themes -- most of the illustrations seem to be 15th century northern European.

There's also the Gastronomie médiévale online exhibit at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France -- many pictures (mostly 15th century) of foodstuffs, food-gathering, and hunting; the kitchen and food preparation; and meals and banquets.
