Throughout the 1990's, one organization has been at the forefront of historical fencing studies. That organization now has a proud new name.

HACA is now the ARMA! We are excited to announce the HACA is now the Association for Renaissance Martial Arts! - ARMA (pronounced 'arm-uh'). The word "arma" means "weapons" and it signifies for us the modern "renaissance" now underway in our subject.

The transition to the ARMA signifies for us a refocusing of vision and a renewed direction. We have expanded our scope. The ARMA continues the same basic philosophy of HACA with a new emphasis on increasing the credibility, legitimacy, and standards of practice within this subject. To learn all about it visit www.thearma.org/about.htm or www.thehaca.com/about.htm. Please note, the new name does not mean we are going to pay less attention to the study of Medieval combat skills, far from it.

To celebrate our new name change we are presenting loads of new online features for the historical fencing community. We've added a massive amount of material: more articles, historical manuals, training tips, essays, interviews, study resources, and more. We've been busy for many months preparing our transition and to inaugurate ARMA our newest additions include:

An Introduction to Historical European Martial Arts page
An article on Renaissance Martial Arts Literature
Jörg Wilhelm's rare Fechtbuch of 1523
Analysis of a 15th century English fencing poem
New image files of Fillipo Vadi's text of c. 1480 along with translated portions
More artwork from Joachim Meyer's 1570 manual
Images from the fencing works of Marozzo, Agrippa, Di Grassi, Capo Ferro, and Alfieri
Additional 16th century fencing information
New Youth Club section - an educational program for kids!
New InTheatre Program - Professional Stage-Combat Certification by a noted authority!
New update of Medieval Fencing Glossary - over 50 new entries
New revision of Renaissance Fencing Terminology - over 25 new entries
Entirely expanded Reading List & Study Bibliography - with over 200 new titles!
Expanded and revised list of historical master's works
Redesigned historical online source manuals page
A new Dialogue with modern practitioners page
Interviews with professional armorers
A new Definitions of Sword Replicas page
New Book & Video reviews
An article on exploring principles of historical swordplay
Our new Expert Consultants page
An article on free play "wargames"
Wav files for pronunciation of Fechtbuch terms
and a large Member's Guide to Renaissance Martial Arts Study

We also have even more membership benefits. In the Member's section we've added a host of new materials, such as 23 new video clips of training & practice, photos, and special features directly aimed at guiding individual practitioners in their training and aiding new Study Groups with their practice sessions.

And this is the just the beginning! We have still more coming in the next few months, such as Antonio Quintino's "Jewels of Wisdom" fencing material of 1614, plus some very special surprises. We will soon be adding more video clips, additional training tips, interviews, expansions, special member's materials, and yet more historical manuals.

ARMA will aim to offer guidance and support to new enthusiasts and experienced students alike, provide training tips and study materials to our members, and strive to bring a higher degree of integrity, dignity, and authority to this subject. We truly are in a "renaissance" of historical European martial arts!

Thanks Ginevra,

Under the "Spotlight" page of the ARMA web sight there is now the following great and insightful read in which two well known armorers answer 25 questions each.

"Armour Thoughts - Interviews with Full-Time Professional Master Armorers."
http://www.thearma.org/spotlight/ArmorInterview1.htm

The interview is composed of two parts. Part I is with Jeff Hedgecock, Historic Arms & Armor and Part II is with Peter Fuller, Medieval Reproductions.

Enjoy,

Jeffrey S. Basham
