I've just spent a frustrating couple of hours on the web searching for books on narrow-wares, particularly finger-loop braiding. I started from the bibliography in _Textiles and Clothing_ from the MoL, but mostly I've reached dead ends, even in local university and museum libraries. I keep finding references to Noemi Speiser's books on braiding, but I can't seem to find them for sale anywhere. I was excited to find that Soper Lane is selling some booklets on braiding and weaving, but they want checks, or rather cheques, in Pounds Sterling. Waa. No instant gratification for me today.

This search has resulted in a number of questions that I hope some of you can help me answer:

Where can I find books on finger-loop braiding for our period?

Which of the available books on tablet-weaving have sound research and content relevant to our period?

Will I be forced to turn to kumihimo for its comforting multitude of books and materials available online?

Thanks in advance,

I just purchased a research paper published by the SCA on fingerloop braids (Compleat Anachronist #108) which contains instructions and about a dozen patterns. The bibliography includes primary (original manuscripts with pattern instructions) and secondary sources. The cost is $4.50.

My online sources are Circa 1265 and Þóra Sharptooth's page.

Hope this helps.

For an SCA publication CA #108 is very good, and if you are interested in fingerloop braiding I quite recommend it. Among other things they identify which braids come from which manuscripts so that you can concentrate on the 15th century ones. The book I have seen by Noemi Speiser was privately published in Switzerland and therefore I think will be quite difficult to find. I did not find it the most helpful book in regards to understanding the braids, I thought the CA was much better.

For tabletweaving specifically related to 14th and 15th century western europe, Textiles and clothing has some good samples. Nancy Spies book on brocaded tablet weaving is very good but covers a broader range. Collingwood has lots of examples and photographs, some of which are relavant to the period. Hansen is generally still available but has several mistakes in the patterns and the translation isn't the best, and the bands are rather early, but i still found it to be rather fun. If you are not at all familar with tablet weaving and are going to have to learn in from a book, I found Candece Crockett's book to provide a good basis that made it possible for me to understand what I needed to get out of the historical examples. Thora Sharptooth also has a very nice annotated bibliography on sources for tabletweaving that you can access off the link Irmele posted earlier.

Mitake.

Noemi Speiser's book (Old English PAtterns for Loop-braiding) can be bought directly from the author - but I am not sure how the payment process will work. But, Handweavers Studios in the UK also stock the book - their website is www.handweaversstudio.co.uk, and they do mail order.
