Hi all,

does anyone have a design for a medieval accounting board, jettons (counting pieces), and an idea on how one is used?

One of the Eye Witness books has a picture of a corner of one, but no real info.

They are pictured on the backs of several 16th C. German (Nuremburg) jetons. Specifically those by Hans Zwingel (and others) have illustrations.

What is pictured on the backs of the jetons...counting boards?

Are there specific books/illustrations you are pointing to? I am not familiar with Hans Zwingel and would be dealing with 15th C Burgundy.

(The Burgundians are running rampant around here. -- heraldic pun not intended.)

Brent,
I will post the "clipped" image of the one I am talking about tonight when I get home.

Explative!

I forgot that we bestowed our book on my niece and failed to replace ours. Looks like my image posting will have to wait.

If memory serves me correctly, the board had a column that went down one slide of the board. Then it had several rows. At the head of each row was a symbol. That's all I could make out from the cropped picture. I am not sure if it formed a checkerboard pattern.

The boards themselves are pictured. I have one but the picture is not not particularly good.

This is rather an old thread -- but I'm a new member, wandering through the boards. The Coin Club of Chicago has an excellent page:

Perspectives in Numismatics - Jetons: Their Use and History
Address:http://www.ece.iit.edu/~prh/coins/PiN/juh.html

Early jetons are often offered on eBay & go quite cheaply (search under "Coins: anc. & medieval" -- sometimes they're spelled 'jettons'). These are mostly late 16th cent. Nuremburg jetons, but earlier ones occasionally show up.

Jno,

Thanks for posting that article. It explained a lot. They even have some good images of jetons of the time.
