Hello,

I'm slowly putting together a persona based on a 7th-9th century Scotsman (blacksmith)[ignore the title I got the centuries messed up]. Yes, I plan on narrowing this down as far as I can.

Here's what I know so far (feel free to correct any errors [please!]): The early portion of this time period is the Scots/Irish actually migrating to Scotland. The primary imagration site is realatively empty of Picts (the book I have on the Picts indicates that the majority are farther East). However, I also have a map indicating that this area is regularly raided by Vikings during this time.

Here's the questions: How much influence are the Viking and Pict tactics and culture having on the Scots just immigrating? Clothes? Armour? Weapons? Fighting Style? Forge design? Are there any books focusing more on the interculture idea exchanges? I have books on the Viking, Picts, and general books on the Celts (particularly Irish) of this time period but not the early Scots. How safe is it to blend <gasp> this information and apply it to the new Scots? Or are they going to stay more true to their old homeland (Ireland)?

hey from Anne-Marie
wow, you like to pick a difficult period to research, dont you!

For food, drink and the distribution of the same, check out Ann Hagens two volume series on Anglo-Saxon Food and Drink. Dont let the title fool you....its a great reference on the period from the Viking invasions to the 14th century or so, with lots of references to other British cultures.

hope this helps!
--Anne-Marie, who has friends trying to do the period scots thing with varied levels of success....
