Greetings Earthlings-

Perhaps one of you net gurus can help me out here.

I'm searching for a book I saw several years ago on the topic of "Rosaries" It was part of the V&A "Introduction to" series. I thought the name was something like "The story of the Rose - Rosaries", or something in that vein.

I can't seem to track it down and though maybe someone more net-saavy would have better luck.

Thanks for any help!

Gwen

Heya Gwen,
Is this the book you are looking for? It didn't say anything about V&A or intro...

Title: Stories of the Rose: The Making of the Rosary in the Middle Ages by Anne Winston Allen. Used HC though it looks like Powells has some newer ones. $19.95 (New is 32.95)

I'm pretty sure it is not the same one, but it's a start.

Jeff and I want Swan & Lion to carry rosaries, but I am unwilling to just string beads together and call it a rosary- I want to do historically correct ones.

Thanks! Anybody else find anything (she inquires hopefully....)

During my search I came across a book on Rosary Kits. Don't know if that would be helpful.

Here's the bib record for the book. Given that the LC call number is SB I think it is a book on the flowers.

Title: The story of the rose.
Author: McIntyre, Jim
Publisher: London : Ward Lock, 1970.
Description: 160 p., 15 plates. col. illus. 25 cm.
Notes: Bibliography: p. 148-156.
ISBN: 0706315030
Subjects: Roses.

Unfortunately I don't have access to OCLC WorldCat which is the efficeint way of checking a bunch of library catalogues. You might try calling the reference desk at your favorite university library to see if they can help track down the bibliographic information which will make it much eaiser to search for with the book sellers.

Mitake.

Here's hoping that it is the one. Otherwise I would have to say, that it is not ready to be found yet.

I did find a book on how to make rosaries. Might be worthwhile, I'll check into it and let you know.

Gwen -

Did you mean the V&A Introductions to the decorative art series - little (thin 48p) black books about 26cm published in the 1980s?

So far i've found the following titles in that series but nothing on rosaries -
fashion illustration, ironwork, English stained glass, sentimental jewelry, English silver from 1660, Islamic arms, European swords, "Victorian" genre painting, wallpaper, Japanese prints, netsuke, medieval ivory carvings, brass, medieval enamels, rings, courtly jewelry, illuminated manuscripts, indian court painting, caricature, English glassware to 1900

BTW - if you are looking for a V&A publication the National Art Library claims to have them catalogued. telnet://library1.nal.vam.ac.uk

Mitake.

I followed the link and poked around their telnet server for over an hour. I have looked, but the only book found with the suggested title, even doing a title keyword search and just a plain ordinary keyword search, yielded precious little. The only book that came close and appears on the server is the one you just ordered.

Mitake found all the other ones in the V&A intro series.

I'm sorry, I suppose I wasn't very clear.

While reorganizing my bookshelves this weekend I noticed a couple of my books seemed to be of the series that Gwen was describing. So armed with the series name I went looking today for a listing of the series. The best I could find was the NAL (National Art Library) catalogue, which only had the titles I listed. and nothing much on rosaries. It's an annoying interface but one of the better sources I've found for bibliographic info on V&A publications.

I also wondered if the little black book series might have been confused with another series of little black books, Museumpromenade* produced by the Friends of the Bruges Museums. Unfortunately their list of subjects is: the flemish primatives, guilds and corporations, table silver, flemish expressionism, music, kitchens, meubles, flowers and gardens, Hans Memling, lace and costume, and the christ child. So really I still have no idea what book Gwen has in mind, but I thought others might find the NAL catalogue useful at some point.

*These books have some pretty cool details of paintings (definately fall under $5/cool picture rule**) One thing is that only the flemish primatives, hans memling, and lace books are available in English. You have the choice of French or Dutch for the others. And the kitchens book is mostly 16th century and later but is still pretty cool. A publications list can be found at http://www.brugge.be/musea/en/mseapubl.htm

**The $5 rule of book collecting states that if you count up the number of cool pictures in a book, divide the cost of the book by that number, and come up with a figure less than $5 the book is a good buy.

No worries. I was just poking around the server (been a long time since I've seen a telnet UI).

That is the series Gwen is looking for, I was just saying that I didn't see anything that addressed the rosary issue, much as you found. The only book I found listed there was the one that Gwen had already purchased.

Which arrived yesterdfay and is a very cool and useful book. I've scanned through it and read the chapter dealing with the actual rosaries. I had no idea there were rosary confraternaties throughout Europe, but it wasn't a suprise to find out the rosaries themselves came under attack as being charms or amulets.

Well worth the $20 I paid if anyone is interested in learning more about this segment of medieval religious practice!
