Hey everyone!

I consider myself to be fairly good at doing research - I can run a search engine like no one's business, and I've never had problems finding books on even very specific topics.

One thing that I've never figured out, however, is how to do journal research.

As I see it, there are two kinds of journal research I'd like to do:

  • I know the topic, but not what journal(s) in which to look
  • I know the journal, even specific volumes, but not which libraries have it.

Any quick tips? I think that this is really becoming a stumbling block for me...

Stephen,

use a search engine like hotbot.com. Keyword search:

online historical journals in "quotes". Hit search button.

Check the box and refine the search by typing in more definitive keywords like "medieval europe" and search again. I found a lot of online stuff, but it is hard to get a little more specific than that without knowing exactly what you are looking for.

Hope this is helpful.

Try this site. It might be helpful. I just found it but haven't given it a test drive yet.

Interesting...Thanks!

Any tips for doing this more conventionally? I need some motivation to keep going back to the library...

Fortunately, I do have access to a University library, and Cleveland Public, which is supposed to be not too shabby.

Again, thanks for the advice guys. I have at least a bit more to go on now...

Probably the best way to get access to journal-type research is to "become" a grad student.

I don't even really mean this in a smart-alek way. If you're seriously looking up some stuff, just find a good nearby university library, go in, and start at the information desk. There's a lot of stuff online, but most of it is still in good ol' fashioned paper form. You won't be able to check books out, but you'll have no problem browsing, using their computer search databases, etc. If they're REALLY nice, they might even have some kind of transient status card they can give you so you CAN check stuff out and get interlibrary loan.

I can get a card to check stuff out (being an alum does have its benefits), but they won't ILL unless you're an actual student. ::shrug::
