Robert/Glen,
as our resident Templars , I thought you all might find some of these book titles interesting. Some may be of tremendous value with your historic personas as well as with camp and equipment details. This is a sampling of book titles and descriptions I took from the Crusades category on Oxbow Books website.

A lot of these titles look REALLY cool. If I hadn't been so Burgundian oriented of late, I might want to pick a few of these up. Some are a bit pricey, but I am sure the scholarship is of a high caliber.

David Brown is the US distributor. Though some of the titles may be available through Amazon, B&N, or Borders. If these other booksellers say it is out of print, go to David Brown Book Company.

Cheers!

An Arab-Syrian Gentleman and Warrior in the Period of the Crusades translated by Philip K Hitti It is rare to find a first-hand account of the crusades and even more so when it comes from a non-European viewpoint. This book contains a translation of the memoirs of Usamah ibn-Munqidh, an Arab-Syrian warrior and veteran of the Crusades. is ancedotal reminiscences tell of his encounters with crusaders, fighting in Egypt, Damascus, wars against the Franks and Moslems, stories of Holy Men, of animals and hunting. Although there are some questions as to the validity and reliability of these memoirs it seems likely that much of it is true with little distortion in transcription and translation. Vivid and detailed, sentimental in places, this provides an important insight into the Crusades from a non-European perspective. 265p (Columbia UP 1983, 2000)... Hardback. Price US $45.00 Paperback. Crusader Art of the Twelfth Century by Bianca Kühnel This comprehensive study of Crusader style and iconography discusses its formation and evolution during the days of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (1099-1187). In her examination of architecture, sculpture, wall painting and mosaic, as well as manuscripts, icons and liturgical objects, Kühnel asks whether Crusader art is recognizable according to typological, iconographical, and stylistic criteria of its own, or solely on the strength of historical evidence. She argues that the quality and essence of Crusader art results from the union of four separate traditions: 12th-century Romanesque art of Western Europe; the Byzantine art of the Eastern Christian Empire; Indigenous Christian art based on a rich early tradition; and Moslem art. She concludes by discussing the constant features of Crusader art, and trying to identify its makers. 263p with 133 plates. (Mann 1994) Hardback. Price US $72.00

Robert, I think Hush and Chef would kill us both!! LOL

Let us know what you find out Glen. You'll have to trade your destrier for a lighter mount.

I think the nice thing about a lot of the titles is you can focus on a geographic location and a timeframe. The other interesting thing is some are written from a non-eurocentric POV which if you have friends playing the other side... a 1st person contemporary POV would be helpful to them in defining their persona. There is one that also talks about cultural convergence.

Lots of cool stuff!

Enjoy!
