Here are a few pictures from our last event. Noone is really good about photo taking any more, so our crop of pictures are limited to what Jeff and I took in a few hours one afternoon. The photos are large, so Jeff assembled them on a page here: http://www.theredcompany-1471.org/bates04.html
- In the first shots our Camp Master Hugo practices Fiori stuff with my valet Archie, who is 14. Archie has rather more enthusiasm than technique at this point, and Hugo is extremely patient with him.
- Next shots should be titled "Like master, like valet". Archie desperately wants to go to England and do jousting and games with Jeff, so Jeff has been teaching him the ropes. Although an extremely accomplished horseman, Archie has been too small to handle a full sized lance and sword. He's finally big enough to weild a sword, and finally got to do some cutting at this event. In this pair Jeff's cut cabbage lies on the ground behind him, while Archie makes a practice pass. This is our horse Petrus, so named because he's as solid as a rock. He absolutely loves to do this stuff, and definately enjoys these events as much as the rest of us do.
- New man at arms Henry. At this moment he's cut through the cabbage and it's not yet fallen from the post.
- Archie's first success, caught on film. His first run and the practice has paid off- he's sliced the cabbage cleanly in two with both his sword and horse completely under control. I'm so proud of him!
 - A late afternoon camp shot. I'm fiddling around in the fire in the back while Masso the armourer, Stephen Clerk and Brother Geoffrey chat.
This was an extremely relaxed and laid back event. Jeff, Henry and Archie did lots of horse stuff- quintain, lance passes, and various skill at arms. I did a lot of sewing and not nearly as much cooking as I would have liked, having been plagued by a migraine that wouldn't go away for 3 days of the event (which -really- sucked, let me tell you!) The other folks did what they are wont do, working on projects, chatting and puttering around camp. One funny thing was that Brother Geoffrey went on a campaign to get everyone to learn their prayers in Latin, so any time 2 or 3 people were sitting in a group he would approach them and say "Right now, practice time! Ready- "Ave Maria, gratia plena...." and drill them in prayers. After a day or 2 he would quiz them - "All right Masso, recite the Paternoster for me!". It was very amusing. Friday night's dinner was dominated by a rather ribald, double entendre discussion of hunting with a spear which left us all with aching sides from having laughed so hard. The weather was very pleasant and mild with no rain, and the only down side was the Santa Anna winds which blew in very hot and dry on Sunday. All in all a very nice event! Gwen
