For a school project, I plan to create a 14th century greathelm and breastplate. I have at my disposal a professional blacksmith and his shop.

My reaserch has been unable to answer these questions.

I was wanting to know what type of steel and gauge would be most accurate. I also would like to know how sizing can be done for the templates.

Thank you for your help.

for sizing, try using the thin 'shirt' cardboard or poster boards material as a pattern. then you can adjust to fit your head. for accurate metal thickness, well depends on use and century but 18 gauge would not be too far off.

It would help to have a rolling machine as most sheet metal work can be done cold.
