Hi All --
I am getting around to hilting a blade I have had for -- literally -- decades. The blade is about 31" long, 3.25" wide at the cross, with a broad shallow fuller about half the length of the blade (Oakeshott type XIV). I bought it "surplus" from Museum Replicas probably 20 years ago, and I don't know if its a Windlass or a Del Tin from way back then. There's a broad tang for about 3" long, then it tapers to a half-inch rod for another inch and a half.
I have a curved cross guard for it, substantial and slightly spatulate at the ends (Also MRL).
I have just received a 2" wheel pommel from Valentine Armouries, so I can finally start.
Now for the advice:
Do I cut a groove in the blade side of the cross, for the shoulder of the blade to rest in? If so, how do I do this?
Can I grind down the shoulder of the blade to lengthen the tang so I have room for the 2" pommel and a 3 and a half inch (or longer) grip? This would make the blade about 29 or 30", and the fuller would then actually disappear into the cross -- is this OK for historical accuracy?.
Thanks for any tips, tales of your own experiences with this sort of activity, etc.

I've never done this sort of a project Kent. I have swords both with a slot in the guard to accommodate the blade, and without, and I think both are historical.
