Hi, I just recently bought a working replica of a 15th century handgonne. I have spent hours upon hours online and in the library trying to find out the way the gunners carried their powder back in the early 1400's. Everywhere I look either skips the part about loading the powder and goes straight to how they fired the gun, or shows drawings but with the gunner turned so I can't see his bag or anything else he might be carrying. Does anyone know the answer to this, and if so, can you show me where to find the documentation? Thanks a bunch

Hi Dustin,

There is an online site covering early firearms, that importantly has posted many images of the day showing handgunners in action. I believe they cover it on that site, but unfortunately I am not working on my home computer, and I have no bookmarks here to find a link for you. I think the site has been linked on FireStryker before, and you might find it by searching for the topic.

Dustin, click the search link at the top and search on "Handgonnes", I think three topics will show and there are quite few links. I don't know if the one that Chef mentions is amongst them, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Hey, thanks for all the advice so far. I searched the site for links on handgonnes, but wasn't able to find anything I haven't already seen. I've also been to handgonnes.com. Great sites, but still none of them tell me if it was a horn or a flask or what. :-( But again, thanks for the help thus far.

Yes, from a burgundian manuscript of 1458 (at the departemental archives of the North at Lille in France, cote 3516) we find that :

each handgun has a "torcays"(bag) with a "bluchotois"(measure for black powder) made of tin-plate, a mould in white stone for the "plommets" (bullets) cast and a "estampe"(loader) in iron.

Yes, you can find it at the site of the national biblioteque of France (Bnf), GALLICA. It it extract from a online-book : "L'artillerie bourguignonne ŕ la bataille de Monthléry" from Jules Finot that include some translated manuscripts (with their origin).
