Does anyone have any information as to whether breath holes or slots were added to bevors? I am making a new bevor but have only seen one example of a bevor with breath holes in it..and i am not sure if it was correct or not. All others have been solid. Thanks

Hi Sir John,

Le Grande Equestre de l'Toisson d'Or, which was illustrated in the late 1430's, early 1440's, depocts bevors worn with sallets that have breaths. Much of the armour depicted in this source is found fairly uniquely in Low Countries art though. The earliest exant bevor woith breaths is by Lorenz Helmschid, and was produced in the 1480's. The vast bulk of existing 15th century bevors have no breaths.

There is a bevor in the RA, Leeds that has two angular slits towards the roll at the top. I don't have a date to it but it's placed with a partial Italian harness (late 15th century) and a deep kettle hat. I would post a photo but copyright restricts me from doing so. (i have all these wonderful digital images and no-one to share them with :-)

That is not a bevor Thomas, it is a later form, popular in Spain, used by Spanish soldiers during the last phase of the Reconquista, and the Conquest of New Spain (and the stages of the Italian wars they participated in).

It is in essence a full visor with it's own occularum, that mates with a chapel de fer. it would eventually evolve into the falling buffe, as worn with 16th century burgonets.
