Hey folks.

I need to know how thick the metal of a 15c sallet generally was, especially German sallets.

Agincourt(sp?) has some as thick as 4,0mm.

I know 2,0mm is 14 gauge and 1,5mm is 16 gauge.

Most commercial helms seem to be 18 gauge (yeck!) and most custom are 16 gauge. SCA armourers do 14 gauge, but tend not to be too interested in fluting or anything above "munition" standards.

I figure armour with heavy fluting is lighter, maybe 16 guage? but some armourers tell me 18 gauge fluted is generally correct. Is this true?!?

I have NO idea what a helm should be, due to these differing opinions and since helms mostly had no fluting, what should I be looking at? 2,0mm (14 gauge)? I tend not to look at anthing under 14 gauge.

What do the rolls say?

Hi Jancemeijer,

I don't know if any have been mapped out over the bowls surface - most vary in thickness, both from method of manufacture, and intentional thickening and thinning. Sallets have been known to range from under 2 lbs weight, to nearly 9 lbs, which would indicate to me that the thickness could vary considerably.

Thanks Chef,

So, would a 16 gauge helm (16 gauge after forming) be appropriate, for a captain of a Kompanie such as myself at least?
