Does anyone know when the hauberk got a splitopening & overlap in front, like this one?

It says 1351-1400 but I'm not sure about that

Hi Herman,

I don't know that Hauberks/haubergeons got such a front split as a general rule atall. There certainly isn't a general date for a general trend - surviving 14th-16th century mail garments come in a wide variety of forms. Worst yet, there has been litle organized study of them, so it is dificult to say anything definitive about them.

Perhaps Erik D. Schmid will weigh in.

Herman,

At the moment I would say it is anyones guess, since there are so many pieces left to be studied. However, it is possible that it came into being sometime during the late 13th century, but that is only a guess.

As Bob said, there was such a tremendous variety of mail garments, that until more of the extant ones are catalogued and studied we will just have to be content with guessing.
