Soon my 14th century suit from Illusion will be here and and would like to strap it with period-ish buckles. Do you have any sources and or suggestions for such an undertaking? Also, to clarify, I will point the armour to a gambeson, but will still need certain parts to buckle up.

London Accessories

I tried and tried to order buckles (over $200 worth) from him, and he would blow off my emails and letters to him. I would get empty answers (those that I got) in the form of a slow reply saying he'd get back to me in a day or two and never would.

There is no question from what few exchanges I had that he has genuine artistic talent and a thorough understanding of casting. And I'll bet that his buckles are very solid. But if he won't sell them or get around to communicating, what's the point of the business?

Depending on the width you need, we keep at least 3-4 styles of buckles that are suitable for use on armour IN STOCK.

No wait, not custom work, IN STOCK.

Of course we can make up particular custom designs too.

I too have had the same poor results with London Accessories, which is sad since they do seem to offer many nice items... must not be real interested in the business...

Hum...
Here in Germany I was faced with a problem even harder to cope with...either I would have had to order the items from America or Great Britain, which would have raised the listed prices by about one third, or I would have had to got to the few craftsmen in Germany who do most of their work for Roman or celt reenactors and offer only a poor range for medievalists.

So I bought a jewellerŽs saw an a few files, at the local hardware store, got some photocopies from Fingerlin and from the london excavations and simply made my own buckles an accessories from some brass sheeting scraps I obtained from a friend.

As it seems I have a little talent, for several people from some of the leading European reenactment societies wanted to know where I bought them- methinks I got my first opportunity to switch from humble to boastful ;o)

Talk about boasting- currently, I am fiddling with a proper design for a nicey 14th century clink-clank plaque belt with a bit of gilding and enamelling. IŽll post a picture or two, as soon as I find someone to scan my work.

For that matter, if one is interested in doing any casting, simple buckles are among the easiest of starter projects. Soapstone is easy to carve -- even I can do it -- and casting is fun.

Hi D.W.,

This is Jason from MetalArts. We have changed our web address to
http://home.gci.net/~grimm/metalarts

Because of events out of our control we had to move our site. Just a note, we are almost done with a large steel casting and a new look for our site. Please take a look in the comming week and see the changes. Thanks,

Jason
