All

I've updated my website again! I've got new pictures that show the progress of my all-riveted coif http://www.forth-armoury.com/Commissions/coif1/coif.htm

And I wrote an article that shows how it is possible to forge-weld solid rings of wire:

Great stuff, Steve. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone tried the technique using period methods i.e. a forge.

I'm no metal / armour guru, but I've seen a forge at work and it *looks* to me like a propare torch would be able to direct the heat more precisely, therefore preventing the ring from melting down.

I intend to try this soon. I wish I had thought to try this a couple of weekends ago at a local SCA event called Convivium Collegialis. They must have had 5 forges going.

Since Steve has managed to light a fire under this topic again (pun intended, rest assured ), I'll just have to drag the forge out again sometime and try it. Assuming, of course, it stops snowing sometime soon. And my coal isn't waterlogged...

Good move using pliers to force the ends together! I had often considered how to manipulate the rings without loosing the welding heat.

As a final weld check I'd suggest cutting the weld cross-wise with a fine saw and see if there is a layer line or seam. A truely completed weld will have no layer line (assuming the two pieces were the same metal type) because the metal fuses so completely as to become one piece of metal. When I was learning to forge weld I'd do this to check myself.

those welded rings look great, as usual your rivited stuff looks better than mine too. I've got to hit a ren fest this weekend, but I'll pull out the forge monday, and see if I can duplicate your welded rings in it.

well I finaly did it, it rained off and onn all week so I ended up doing it in a light sprinkle. I used an old buffalo forge and coal, I baked the coal untill it was mostly coke, and untill the sulfur smoke dissipated.

My results were simular to Steves, eccept my rings scaled worse, mostly becuase I'm used to working larger pieces, and could not concentrate the heat for somthing that small, some of the rings overheated, and most of them objected to welding (think the humidity caused problems) The ones that did weld looked just like Steve's with more scale. I suspect with more practice I could get the process down, eliminate the overheating, and get more consistant welds. I'll post pics as soon as I get my camera back (college is borrowing it to make an inventory of artwork)
